On Saturday night Mary was spotted at Italian restaurant La Vela in Vedbæk. Among the group of friends she was with were Rigmor Zobel and her husband, lawyer Jesper Ravn, Sarah Zobel & her then husband, hotel owner Alexander Kølpin, Ellen Hillingsø, baron Johan & baroness Rebecca Wedell-Wedellsborg, Birgitte & Jeppe Handwerk, Peter Aaendahl, Nina Wedell-Wedellsborg, children's author & fashion designer Shane Brox, countess Jean & count Ditlev Ahlefeldt-Laurvig.
Afterwards they walked to Johan & Rebecca Wedell-Wedellsborg's home, a few minutes from the restaurant. The Wedells had organized this get together because they were moving to the USA.
Rigmor Zobel, who was among the group of friends, had been convicted for buying and using cocaine a month earlier and taking part in gang related crime. She had talked to the press about it, saying how unfair her conviction was and how a police officer, whom she named, had ruined her career - before jetting off to Gstaad for a holiday. Mary knew Rigmor would attend the dinner. The crown prince couple has always been on good terms with the Zobel family and Rigmor in particular had been a good friend of the couple when they were living in Fredensborg.
Danish press immediately linked the socialite drug user to crown princess Mary and wondered why they were hanging out together. Ellen Hillingsø later commented to a journalist that it was just a large group of people out having dinner.
It was one of the few times (after Mary's start as "fashion and luxury princess" and the revelations in Trine Villemann's books) where Mary was publicly criticized.
