Visit to Greenland: Day 2

20 June 2009

At 10:15 Mary visited the Nuuk Crisis Centre.

Crown prince Frederik also arrived in Greenland, to participate with Mary in the activities surrounding the beginning of Greenland's self rule.

Apart from their obvious love for the Greenlandic region, the well loved Danish royal family is politically also an "easy link" between Greenland and the mainland, that doesn't want to miss out on Greenland's economic value.

At 13:20 Frederik & Mary visited Mælkebøtten.

At 18:00 the crown prince couple visited children's homes in Qoornoq.

Mary wore new earrings by Marianne Dulong, and a new jacket by Ralph Lauren.

Færøerne visit

In June 2005 Frederik & Mary -who was expecting Christian- made a 5-day official visit to the Faroe islands. They were accompanied by queen Margrethe II and prince Henrik.

Like Greenland, the Faroe are a self-governing autonomous region of Denmark. They are situated halfway between Norway and Iceland.

Unlike the love Frederik and Mary cherish for Greenland - they have often visited the country, both on official, charitable, sportive and private occasions, posed in Greenlandic traditional costume for their christmas cards and have given their twins Inuit names - they have so far never returned to the Faroe islands.

The Faroe have about the same population as Greenland (around 50.000) and hold a great natural beauty. The country however doesn't have the same economic interests as Greenland, think: gas and oil reserves.

wedding gift + donation

25 October 2004

Frederik & Mary received a late wedding gift from the town of Tommerup: a massive2,80 meter high vase made by artist Gunhild Rudjord. Everyone who donated financially to make the gift possible has their name inscribed on the inside of the vase.

The sculpture was placed in the park of Fredensborg with the crown prince couple present.

The same day Frederik & Mary made an official donation to Red Barnet, represented by chairwoman Mimi Jakobsen who received the profits of the prewedding Rock 'n Royal concert: 135.000 euro that went to a project in Greenland. This took place at Amalienborg in Copenhagen.
