Margrethe 70: Gala for Danish Officials

For more than a week Queen Margrethe II's upcoming 70th birthday was celebrated with a large number of festive events in Denmark, culminating in a various galas. Mary was at the very start of her third pregnancy, expecting twins. The news hadn't been made public yet.

A first grand gala banquet for queen Margrethe's 70th birthday was hosted at Christiansborg. Apart from the royal family, princess Benedikte & prince Richard von Sayn-Wittgenstein Berleburg, guests included the members of government and other officials such as mayors and judges.

The royal guests arrived at 19:30.

Mary wore the red gown, designed by Uffe Frank that she originally wore on the night before her wedding day. She's also worn it to the gala for the Bulgarian state visit in 2006.

Around this time Mary's third pregnancy started. At this stage it was still very private, and the couple possibly wasn't aware yet they would be having twins.

Bulgarian state visit to Denmark

29 March 2006

Crown princess Mary was part of the welcoming committee that awaited Bulgarian president Georgi Parvanova and his wife Zorka at Copenhagen airport.

Also present were crown prince Frederik, princess Benedikte, prince Henrik and queen Margrethe II.

At night a gala dinner took place at Christiansborg.

Also present at the gala were countess Alexandra of Frederiksborg and princess Elisabeth.

A set of new official photos was released. They were taken earlier in 2004.

In 2018, for crown prince Frederik's 50th birthday some other, less posed pictures were published from this shoot.

Pre-wedding gala concert

The culmination of the pre-wedding festivities was the gala concert at den konglige teater in Copenhagen. Mary appeared for the second time with the ruby parure in all its glory and in a red gown inspired on one of queen Ingrid's gowns. It was designed by Uffe Frank.

The glamorous evening was broadcast live on Danish TV2.

The gala concert was attended by the Donaldson family and a great  number of royal guests. A dinner was offered to them afterwards by princess Benedikte on board the Dannebrog.
